What is considered bad manners or rude in your country? smilehuge.gif

For example, licking a knife? Sticking chocksticks into a pot of noodles?

Can you think of an example that's probably only rude in your country?

Definitely the Hitler greeting, raising your right arm straight up so it's a little higher than horizontal. I think it's even illegal.

This is of course because of Germany's history, we still are very careful about nationalistic stuff.

in the US, it's ok to eat with your fingers if it's a finger food, like french fries or chicken fingers or whatever smile.gif

sithman25 has a pretty good list of stuff that's bad manners here...i can't think of any more that are specifically US at the moment...if i can think of anything i'll post em!

Putting your elbow on the table. Something you usually don't notice doing. You don't get lynched for it, but it's something that your parents try to instill in you since an early age. Can't think of anything closer to Hungary right now.

In some countries, for example Morocco, eating with your fingers is encouraged. smile.gif

Continuing on the food theme, in some countries it's impoilte to slurp your soup. In other countries, it's rude not to slurp, because if you don't - you're not showing your appreciation for the chef. smilehuge.gif

How about rude hand gestures? As someone already mentioned, giving someone the middle finger (bird) is bad in the US and most anywhere else I can think of...

In Italy you put your hand, palm down and fingertips towards your throat, under your chin and flip the hand upwards. That is their equivalent to the bird.

In a lot of countries, raising a hand where the tumb and indexfinger touch to form an O (o, for ok) is a good thing. In other places, this is an insult as it signifies that someone is a zero.

- Spitting

- Sneezing without trying to capture the .... well I can't think of a polite word but youget the point

- Jumping the Queue. This is something that seems to be frequently done by certain groups of international visitors tounge.gif (lol that shall remain nameless). The British are a proud nation of waiting lol. Queue jumping is always met with disdain.

- Early placement of towels on recliners at poolside in a resort...... Again I won't mention the particular nation often most responsible as we all know who you are lol wink.gif

- Talking whilst eating

- Belching at the table.

- The opposite of belching ANYWHERE

- People who do not wash their hands after using the WC. Often observed in public toilets.

... I could probably go on indefinately lol

Hee hee - apology accepted. Never actually upset me as I have never been on holiday to experience that problem, but I often hear others tell me lol.

queeeeeen: Nuliaj is objecting to ceratain holiday makers hogging the best spots to sit by the pool/beach. They do this by putting a towel on the chair and then mysteriously dissapear for hours on end.

I haven't experienced this phenomena either. I only visit public beaches at home and abroad. They have no chairs, and it's first come first serve to get the best spots. The pool that belongs to my building in France is only accessible to people in our building, so we don't have to fight over chairs. smilehuge.gif

As Blue says its a tongue-in-cheek nudge at the Germans wink.gif .... They are "famous" for putting there towels down on the good spots but not using them until later. Personally I would have just picked up their towels & lobbed 'em in the pool lol.

Its funny because there have been numerous tv commercials that have played on this practise by our German friends to help sell their products. Difficult to explain really eyeball.gif hmmmmmm I'll stop now lol

to be honest, i never was on vacation in some hotel or holiday resort, so i didn't experience this myself, but yes, we are famous for it.
germans on holiday is something very horrible to think about in general. just to think about what the average german man wears on vacation: khaki shorts, sandals with socks *pukes* and probably a camera hanging round their neck... this is what makes me ashamed of my country tounge.gif

In my country, giving or taking things from people with your left hand is VERY rude, also, eating with your left hand (without cutlery). This is because in Malay culture, you use your left hand to wipe your bottom after using the toilet.

Oh, and also calling people 'Kurang Ajar' pronounced 'KOO-rahng AH-jar' which means uneducated, stupid and without manners.
