Why is the forum suddenly getting invaded by spambots?!
Has this happened before? confusedsmall.gif
During my time here I've never seen any... until now...

I bet it's the empire

I tell you They're taking over... paranoid.gif
Tyrena
The Empire is taking over? OMG!
Fasten all seatbelts, seal all entrances and exits, close all shops in the mall, cancel the three ring circus, secure all animals in the zoo!

And of course, stop smoking!

I think that the software responsible for spybots has improved, thus they're invading here.
Some forums counter this by forcing you - if you register - to type in a certain number-and-letter code presented as a pic, so spybots can't read them (they see only that the data is a pic).

It looks that way, yes. sad.gif

Looks like we've been registered in some database with available forums to spam. It was only a matter of time unfortunately. We've only had manual spammers here before. Now it's completely automatic.

We already have the anti-spambot system Arca mentioned. It helps somewhat but it's not 100% effective. q.e.d.
Blue Harvest
Oh yes! I'd just like to add something...

The mods and I will remove/disable the links posted by spambots so that their purpose fails. We will also close their topics down if nessesary.

Unfortunately there is nothing else we can do (that hasn't already been done) to stop spambots from registering and posting. The bots usually post once and dissapear.

It's an annoying problem but we should count ourselves lucky if we only get the odd one, every once in a while. confused.gif

We could put into place Plan B ? - that all would-be site members have to sit a 3 hour written exam with essay questions on every topic covered by the forum ...

smilehuge.gif
Arca Hejaran
Yes, but if the spambots are already that intelligent to circumvent our security system, they would probably copy an essay from supershadow scared.gif
Darth Nuliaj
Which is perfect then as they wouldn't get in. Everyone can spot SS's fabrications a mile off. smilehuge.gif

Not always. Sometimes they have perfectly legitimate names. smilesmall.gif

The dead giveaway is how obvious it is that the new member only registered to promote something. A little text and links.

Don't worry about the spambots. The mods and I will take care of them. If you spot something that looks like a spambot - just ignore it. smile.gif
Number1hockeyfan
True, but I've seen that happen lots of times.
Blue Harvest
Oh sure, it's something that makes our job easier. smile.gif
Sirquirkalot
Maybe we should give spambots there own section, so at least they know where to go! smilehuge.gif in fact...

I knew that wasn't a real member! confusedsmall.gif So that's why it keeps saying that someone is "using the force" in a topic, yet nothing shows up...

Yup. You'll see they all "post" the same day they registered...

*shakes fist*
Damn you, spambot!

Somewhere in the deep Antarctic...

A penguin sitting at a computer workstation has been monitoring the goings on of a certain blueharvest.net. He picks up the phone and calls his supervisor.

"They're catching on to us," the penguin reports.

"So soon!?" the commanding penguin asks. "It is time then. Call off the spambots and proceed with phase two. Contact our comrades and let them know we have moved up our timetable."

"Yes sir!" the first penguin replies. A cruel smirk widens into an evil grin across his face. This is going to be a fun day, he thinks. evil.gif

I know. We're on some list somewhere. angry.gif Oh well, doesn't matter. Spambots (and penguins) can register and try to post as much as they want. They won't get in. Muahahahaaaaa! evil.gif wink.gif

The spambots try to post because that's in their programming. What they don't know is that they can't post if their account hasn't been approved by me. So that's why it doesn't matter if they try to post. They won't be successful. satisfied.gif
